#984 A English teacher worries Japanese boys future
I met a friend and her boyfriend who is Australian. He is an English teacher in a high-level high school.
Japanese boys don’t study hard.
He worries about English education in Japan seriously, because students can’t say a basic sentence, for example, “What is the date?”, even when they know the present perfect. Students study for passing the English exam not for communication. He said “they need to practice English in everyday life.” And he said that young boys don’t study hard. On the other hand, young girls study very hard. He worries about Japanese boy’s future and Japan’s future. I was shocked to hear that. I didn’t know Japanese boys don’t study hard.
I should have spoken English!
My friend tried to speak English with her boy friend. I felt happy to see that she is practicing English. But I didn’t speak English, because the Australian can understand Japanese very well. I felt I should have spoken English for practice. I was being lazy. She will be a good English speaker. I feel envious of that.
That night was very very hot.(2015.7.30)
